I"m biased because it's my practice, but I prefer Shaolin for many reasons. I prefer styles that encourage ballance, fighting as a last resort and focuses more on defense. If you are in a fight that is serious enough to threaten life or death, only then should you use the deadly methods taught.

1. When choosing a studio be sure to sit in on a session and observe the teaching practices.
2. Find a practice that encourages ballance of physical, mental and spiritual...not just kicking and punching.
3. Observe teachers and observe the skills of students. If you see brown and blackbelts slopply practicing forms then it's obviously a studio with distorted priorities. (eg: cares more about making money than the practice)
4. My advice is to check the yellowpages or business white pages for marshall arts studios in your local area, also search the web for descriptions of various styles that you find. Keep in mind that many practices of martial arts combine multiple forms.

The one you pick should teach you dicipline, service before self, value of community, leadership, positve attitudes and peace over power.

Hope that helps and good luck on finding an awsome practice!
